Service Overview

Guttering — what it covers and when it's right.

What it is

Guttering moves rainwater off the roof, away from the wall, into the drainage system. When it fails — blocked, leaking, sagging or undersized — water tracks down the wall, soaks the masonry, freezes, cracks pointing and finds its way inside.

Who it's for

Every property owner. If you can see water marks on the wall below the gutter, leaking joints, sagging sections or damp spots on internal walls, your gutters need attention now.

When you need it

Repair when joints leak or sections sag. Full replacement when sections are over 25 years old or undersized for modern rainfall (a real issue with 1960s–80s 75mm half-round on properties that now flood).

Why a professional

Gutter work is working-at-height. The bargain Facebook offer turning up on a stepladder will fall — and your home insurance will not cover their injuries. Beyond safety, proper specification matters: half the 'gutter problems' we're called to are actually undersized systems that need uprating.

What happens if you wait

The cost of ignoring it always exceeds the cost of fixing it.

Damp on external walls

Permanently wet masonry cracks in winter freeze cycles and admits damp into rooms behind.

Damaged pointing and render

Render blowing off and pointing washing out around blocked gutters — costly to repair when proper guttering would have prevented it.

Soffit and fascia rot

Water cascading behind a blocked gutter rots timber fascias within 2 seasons. Replacement triples the cost.

Foundation damage

Persistent water at the wall base saturates foundations, especially on Tayside clay subsoils — heave and subsidence risks.

Roof timber rot

Water backing up under tiles where eaves gutters overflow rots rafter feet — major structural repair territory.

Common mistakes we get called to fix

Most of these started as someone trying to save a few hundred pounds.

  • Patching joints with silicone instead of replacing failed brackets
  • Re-using 75mm half-round when 112mm deep-flow is needed for the catchment area
Our Process

A five-step system — no surprises.

01

Step 1 — Free inspection

Visual survey from ground and roof, honest diagnosis of repair vs. replace.

02

Step 2 — Written quote

Itemised: section meterage, brackets, downpipes. Written quote.

03

Step 3 — Access set up

Tower scaffold or roof ladders depending on height. No working from leant ladders.

04

Step 4 — Work carried out

Old system removed (where replacing), new bracketing at correct 600mm centres, falls set to outlets, downpipes fitted to outlets.

05

Step 5 — Test & sign-off

Water test from a hose, leaks rectified before sign-off.

The Benefits

What you actually get when you hire Rossi.

Stops the damp

Removing the water source removes 80% of external wall damp issues.

Protects everything below

Walls, foundations, soffits, fascias, internal plaster — guttering protects all of it.

Right size for your roof

We calculate catchment area and spec the system to handle Tayside rainfall — not generic 75mm half-round.

Manufacturer warranty on new systems

Deep-flow uPVC and cast aluminium supplied with the manufacturer's warranty.

Safe access, properly insured

Working at height done with proper kit and £5M insurance — not a stepladder and good wishes.

In Depth

The materials, methods and variations behind guttering.

Modern guttering is more than 'PVC pipe with brackets'. Catchment, fall, bracket spacing, downpipe diameter and outlet position all matter — and getting any of them wrong is why most gutters overflow in heavy rain. Here's the detail.

Materials we use

  • Floplast and Marley deep-flow uPVC — 112mm/117mm profiles, 65mm downpipes, supplied with the manufacturer's warranty
  • Cast aluminium (Alumasc, Rainclear) — heritage-appropriate, 30-year life, available in any RAL colour
  • Cast iron — restoration of listed and conservation properties, 50+ year life
  • Galvanised steel for industrial and agricultural buildings
  • Stainless steel bracket fixings — never galvanised, which rust through in 5 years on a wet bracket

Methods we follow

  • Bracket centres calculated for the gutter profile and roof load (typical: 600mm, tighter at outlets and stop ends)
  • Falls set 1:600 minimum toward outlets — flat gutters always pool and silt up
  • Outlets sized for catchment area to BS EN 12056 — bigger roofs need bigger pipes
  • Continuous runs jointed with thermal expansion joints at the correct centres
  • Downpipes fitted with rodding access for future maintenance
  • Cast aluminium and cast iron jointed with butyl mastic, never silicone (silicone fails in UV)

Variations of this service

Domestic uPVC replacement

Most common job. Strip, rebracket, fit new deep-flow uPVC, route downpipes to existing drains. 1-day install on typical semi.

Heritage aluminium and cast iron

Listed and conservation properties — heritage profile, RAL-matched paint, traditional brackets. We supply and fit.

Commercial industrial guttering

Box gutters, valley gutters, parapet gutters — major-flow systems for warehouses and units, often with internal outlets.

Gutter repair

Replacement of failed sections, brackets, joints. Where the wider system is sound, targeted repair is more economic than full replacement.

When it applies

Typical situations we're called for across Tayside and Fife.

  • Post-storm damage
  • Persistent overflow in heavy rain (usually undersized)
  • External wall damp diagnosed back to gutter failure
  • Full replacement during a re-roof (always cheaper while scaffold is up)

Residential vs commercial

Domestic uPVC and aluminium installs are typically completed in 1–2 days. Commercial box and valley gutters require fall-arrest, CDM 2015 documentation and out-of-hours work to avoid tenant disruption — all within our scope.
